School day & terms

Ukrainian School. This section of the site will give you an overview of our school terms and a typical day at St. Mary’s

St Mary’s Ukrainian School in London is a Saturday community school operating 40 academic Saturdays a year plus some extra Sundays/Saturdays for community events and staff training. Our academic year usually begins with a Celebration Assembly for pupils and parents on the second Saturday in September and finishes on the last Saturday in June with a School Leavers’ Assembly.

The school year is split into two terms:

  • First Term starts on the 2nd Saturday of September with St. Nicholas Day performances in December marking the end of our first Term. The school then has 3 Saturdays off to celebrate Christmas.
  • Second Term begins mid-January, has one Saturday off for Ukrainian Easter and ends on the last Saturday in June.

At St. Mary’s the School Day starts at 9:45 and finishes at 13:30:

  • At 10am all pupils and staff begin the School day with the Ukrainian anthem and a short assembly.
  • Every academic Saturday consists of 4 lessons split into 2 sessions with a 30 mins lunch break in-between from 11:30am to 12 pm.

Children are dropped off and collected in the School Main Hall. Reception and Year 1 classes are usually dismissed from the main entrance.

For Early Years and KS1 pupils we recommend a packed lunch to be brought to school while the older pupils can order a hot meal of their choice from the Ukrainian club canteen. The order should be preferably placed before 10am or some time in advance for the kitchen to have it cooked on time.
